Day one

Each dot is one of the 1000 words. It turns gold once you remember it after a night's sleep.

First sitting

Your first sentence, and you can read it.

Mi casa es tu casa.

My house is your house.

100 words

Your first conversation, made only of words you know. Six of every ten words said in Spanish films and TV are now words you know.

500 words

Nearly eight of every ten words said are now words you know. Most of a sentence is familiar, and a new conversation waits at every hundred.

1000 words

The list is done. More than eight of every ten words said in Spanish films and TV are words you know, on sight and by ear.

Press the gold button. It always says what is next.

A sitting is about five minutes: a few new words, then the ones coming back to you. Here is how a word becomes yours.

One

You answer first.

You are asked before you are shown. Pulling a word out of memory is what makes it stay. Never seen it? Tap Show me, and it is taught.

Two

It comes back just before you would forget.

Each time you remember, the gap grows: minutes, a day, then weeks and months. A miss brings it back sooner.

Three

By ear, not only by eye.

Once you know a word by sight, its reviews are played and not shown. Understanding Spanish when it is spoken is the point.

A conversation made only of words you know.

Each stage ends on a short scene between two people. This is the first, at 100 words. Read it, listen, then check yourself.

  1. AnaHola. ¿Cómo estás?Hello. How are you?
  2. LuisMuy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?Very well, thanks. And you?
  3. AnaBien. ¿Tienes algo que hacer ahora?Fine. Do you have something to do now?
  4. LuisAhora no puedo. ¿Por qué?I can't right now. Why?
  5. AnaQuiero hablar de algo. ¿Vamos a mi casa?I want to talk about something. Shall we go to my house?
  6. LuisSí, vamos. Pero ahora no.Yes, let's go. But not now.

The end of the verb tells you who.

Spanish mostly leaves out the words for I, you and he. Nine short steps of Who and when teach you to read the ending instead, a few minutes a day once you know 100 words.

hablar, to speak

Questions

Is Mil free?

Yes, on iPhone and Android. There are no ads and no account to make.

How long does it take?

A sitting is about five minutes. At the starting pace of 10 new words a day, a full day is up to half an hour, and the whole list is about 30 hours spread over a few months. Change the pace any time.

Who is it for?

English speakers starting Spanish, and anyone who learned some and wants the most common words solid. If you know some already, a fast pass at the start skips them.

Will I learn to speak?

Mil is built for understanding: Spanish on sight and by ear. It has no speaking or writing drills, so every minute goes to the words.

Where do the 1000 words come from?

From what people actually say. The list is counted from Spanish film and TV subtitles and checked against Spanish at large, then taught in that order.
